Gil Tepper MD, FACS
Dr. Gil Tepper is an orthopedic spine surgeon based out of Los Angeles, California. Throughout his career, Dr. Tepper has focused on providing his patients with personalized care and attention in order to provide treatment options that complement each patient’s lifestyle. As the Director of Valley Spine Center and The Spine Institute at Miracle Mile Medical Center, Dr. Tepper uses non-surgical services as well as surgical options to help patients recover and lead pain-free lives.
In 1986, Dr. Gil Tepper graduated from the Chicago Medical School with honors. Before he graduated, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. Dr. Tepper decided to focus on back pain and spine disorders for two important reasons. First, the work is complex and challenging. Second, the field was undergoing a renaissance while Dr. Gil Tepper was training to become a doctor. The new technology and diagnostic methods that Dr. Tepper learned about in training were exciting and interesting. Gil Tepper MD wanted to be a part of the field’s renaissance.
One of the best aspects of working in the medical field is getting to interact with patients on a daily basis. Dr. Gil Tepper enjoys tailoring treatment options for each patient. Treatment can’t be taken out of the context of a person’s lifestyle. With each patient, Dr. Tepper learns about their family picture, their career, and considers their genetics. The appropriate treatment option must fit in with the individual’s lifestyle. Otherwise, it’s unlikely to help the patient relieve their pain. Witnessing a patient recover is another one of Dr. Tepper’s favorite aspects of working in the medical field.
Due to the issues surrounding healthcare coverage, it can be difficult for doctors to run successful businesses. The price of treatment continues to increase while reimbursements decrease. At the same time, not every patient can afford the treatment that they need in order to live a healthy life. Dr. Gil Tepper strives to provide high-quality care in spite of the challenges associated with the changing landscape of healthcare. His commitment to helping patients feel helps him overcome the challenges related to the country’s current healthcare situation.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Tepper has authored numerous publications, lectured throughout the country, and researched many important issues. At the moment his research is focused on finding solutions to reduce narcotic dependence. For example, solutions may include using longer-acting anesthetics or biological approaches. Today many doctors run with solutions before fully studying the problem, or they apply solutions without tracking results. Dr. Tepper believes in data-driven research, and he is currently developing protocols to help doctors use data more efficiently.
When it comes to treating patients, Dr. Gil Tepper stresses that recovery is mental as well as physical. If a patient is stressed, he or she will have a difficult time recovering from surgery. One of the biggest challenges of working on the spine is that there is no way to separate the physical from the mental, and minor conditions can become major if stress is not managed. Dr. Tepper encourages all of his patients to learn how to regulate their emotional wellbeing so that they can weather setbacks and pain better.
